About the episode
The Truth About UGC (And Why It’s Not As Simple As Picking Up Your Phone)
What actually goes on behind the scenes at a digital marketing agency? To answer that, we sat down with Beth, our Digital Marketing Assistant, to chat about shifting from in-house marketing to agency life, why user-generated content (UGC) is dominating social feeds, and why going viral isn't always the golden ticket for your business.
Agency Life vs In-House Marketing
Having worked in both in-house roles and agency environments, the contrast between the two is massive. In-house marketing often means wearing every single hat in the building: running campaigns, writing blogs, managing social channels, and handling admin.
In an agency, you are surrounded by specialists in their specific niches. Because everyone has a different focus, you get to pool creative ideas across dozens of different industries. An idea that might not fit a local service business could be a huge hit for an e-commerce brand. It keeps things fresh, creative, and constantly moving.
What UGC Actually Is (And What It Isn't)
User-generated content, or UGC, has exploded across TikTok and Instagram Reels. At its core, UGC is natural, unpolished content, like unboxing videos, product trials, or "come with me to this cafe" vlogs.
When done well, it works brilliantly because it feels like a recommendation from a friend rather than a hard sell from a business. Modern audiences are quick to scroll past polished, scripted advertisements that list product bullet points off a website. Instead, people respond to genuine human experiences and honest reviews.
However, there is a big misconception that UGC just involves whipping out your phone, hitting record for 15 seconds, and posting it. In reality, effective UGC takes proper planning. Creators have to think about the initial hook to capture attention in the first second, how to naturally integrate the product into a daily routine, and how to match the brand's tone of voice without sounding forced.
Going Viral vs Building a Strategy
It is easy to get caught up in trending audio, viral video formats, and massive view counts. But a viral video does not automatically translate into paying customers.
Unless you are directly selling a low-cost product on TikTok Shop, platforms like TikTok are primarily built for brand awareness. If a video gets a million views from people all over the world, but none of those viewers are in your target demographic, it will not grow your business.
Different platforms serve very different purposes:
TikTok and Reels: Great for brand personality, humanising your team, and top-of-funnel awareness, provided you are willing to have a bit of fun with your brand.
Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn: Often much better for targeted messaging, reaching specific customer demographics, and converting interest into genuine leads.
Professional Content & Static Posts: Highlighting real faces, behind-the-scenes moments, and clean graphic assets still drives some of the highest engagement across the board.
Finding the Balance
The most effective social media strategies rely on a healthy mix of content. Relying purely on unpolished UGC can feel repetitive, while relying solely on rigid corporate posts can feel distant.
The sweet spot lies in combining natural, relatable content with clear, strategic messaging, and ensuring every video gives people a reason to stop scrolling within the very first second.
